CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
âWho told you I was here?â
âCallieâs husband.â
âReed?â
âYes.â I nod and launch into the whole explanation. âCallieâs my friend. Well, sheâs recently become my friend. And I asked Poe, my other friend â whoâs also recently become my friend â for her help to find you. And that she should ask Callie to ask Reed about where you ââ
âWhy?â he asks, impatient.
âBecause I thought Reed would know where you ââ
âJesus,â he growls. âWhy did you want to find me?â
Oh right, that.
âBecause I wanted to talk to you,â I whisper, âand you blocked my number.â
His eyes narrow. âAnd that didnât clue you in that I didnât wanna talk to you?â
âWell, yeah,â I say, biting my lip.
He watches me bite my lip with almost a glare. âBut you decided to stalk me anyway.â
I let my tingling lip go. âI wasnât stalking. This isnât stalking.â
âYeah, no. This is pretty much stalking 101.â
âSo, fine. Okay. I was stalking. But only because I wanted to tell you things.â
âWhat things?â
Letting out a deep breath, I look into his angry but beautiful dark eyes. âThat weâre friends.â
âWhat?â
âYou and me.â I swallow. âWeâre friends now.â
He stares at me for a beat or two. âHowâs that?â
âBecause weâve made progress.â
âProgress.â
âYes.â I nod. âIn the p-past few days.â
Again, he studies me for a few seconds. âWhat kind of progress?â
âWell,â I clear my throat, blushing under his intense gaze. âFor one, we donât make each other sick with hate anymore.â
âWe donât.â
I blush harder. âNo. And youâve been helping me. With my problem. And protecting me and keeping an eye on me. And we saw that movie together the other night. Plus we text and I know you call it a work phone but sometimes I just text you to talk to you and I think ââ
âYeah, you do.â
I dig my fingers in his neck. âI know you hate texting.â
âYes.â
âBut sometimesâ¦â My heartâs racing really fast now. âSometimes I just want to talk to you.â
His jaw tics as he stares and stares at me.
âAnd now youâve blocked my number.â
Even though Iâve only essentially had this phone for a little over a week and it was only last weekend when I started texting him just for the hell of it, it still felt like a loss.
Not being able to contact him.
Because I do it just to say hi to him.
Or tell him about the book that I downloaded. That never wouldâve been possible if not for him. Or that I stayed up all night to read it.
Thatâs what friends do, donât they?
They talk to each other. They text and call.
And while I know that he doesnât feel like a friend or only like a friend, I donât know what else to call it.
When Reign doesnât answer me, I say, âAnd so I came here because I wanted to ask you to unblock it and ask why you blocked it in the first place. And I have to tell you that ââ
My words cut off when he pulls my head back.
Yanks it back, actually, with his hand in my hair.
